OWNER OF THE HOPS &
Dark Star Sunburst It's in the name:
a super-refreshing and zesty
beer. Perfect for a hop junkie
sitting in the sun.
Hopf Helle Weisse A banging
wheat beer with super
vanilla, citrus aromas and good carbonation to give
you a proper refreshing snap.
Oakham Ales Blonde Using Waimea and Pacific Jade hops,
this golden blonde ale is rich and chewy on the mid-palate
and has a long, dry finish.
Lagunitas CitruSinensis Strong at 8%, this is rich and full of
flavour. It's brewed using the juice of Sanguinello blood
oranges and a combination of wheat and malt, producing
a super-citrus in-your-face pale ale.
TIM PEYTON, MANAGER
AT THE REAL ALE SHOP,
To ØL Gose To Hollywood A lightly
tart Citra-led juice box of a
beer, made with Californian
oranges and a tasteful sprinkling
of salt. It is not as weird as it
sounds - simply plain delicious.
Kernel Table Beer This is the best-selling beer in the shop,
and it's easy to see why. Accessible, low in alcohol and
extremely refreshing. It's light but still oozes character.
Siren Calypso One of the finest Berliner Weisses on
the market. Pretty upfront and sour to begin with,
but then it gently pummels you with fleshy tropical
fruits from the dry hops.
Birricio Italiano Tipopils The ultimate pilsner in my
book. Clean as a whistle with a lovely nose of geranium
and acacia and the crispest of finishes. This would
be on tap on my desert island.

Magic Rock Salty Kiss Gooseberry Gose
A German-style sour beer,
brewed with gooseberries to
add a fruity kick. As tart as you
like, it is surprisingly thirst-quenching.
Roosters Baby Faced Assassin Packed full of aromas and
flavours of mango, grapefruit and soft apricot, this is a juicy
blast of tropical fruit. Watch out: the 6.1% abv completely
fails to show itself until you try to stand up.
Gipsy Hill Beatnik Pale Ale At 3.8%, you can enjoy a
few of these session pale ales without feeling too
much the worse for wear. Bursting with tropical
fruit aromas, Beatnik hits you with a barrage of flavour
that belies its low strength.
Orbit Brewing Nico Nico sits somewhere between a lager and
an ale. It is beautifully light on the palate, with a grassy
aroma and an intense bitterness more akin to a pale ale.
BARS + DRINK
A GREAT WIT
What gives a lot of these saisons their
delicate texture, lightness and refreshing,
crisp acidity is the use of wheat in the
mash bill. So it makes sense that both the
wheat-driven Weissbier and Witbier,
originating in Bavaria and Belgium
respectively, come into their own
when the sun comes out.
Hazy Belgian Witbiers are commonly
brewed with coriander and orange peel,
and make an ideal accompaniment to
summer salads and light fish dishes,
complementing the dish like a squeeze of
lemon and smattering of herbs.
As anyone who has spent an afternoon in
a sunny Munich beer garden will testify, a
frothy-headed, bulbous glass of Erdinger
Urweisse can slake a thirst with Teutonic
efficiency from a hundred yards.
Finally, you can't forget lager in the
summer months. True lager, languidly
matured for long periods in cold conditions,
has an elegance to it; a lightness of touch
with a spritzy bitterness from the hops. And
one lager-conditioned beer that has all of
these things is Mahrs Bräu Ungespundet, a
cracking unfiltered Kellerbier (cellar beer)
that's lagered for eight weeks in Bamberg.
Other lovely lagers to let into your life
include Hobo Craft Czech Lager,
ornbridge Bayern Pilsener, Birrificio
Italiano Tipopils and the unpasteurised
Pilsner Urquell Tank Beer, now available
from a growing number of outlets.
Whichever of these styles of beer you
choose, you can guarantee that it will be
perfect after a long, hard day moving
icons around your desktop.
