Out of this world
Samantha Cristoforetti gathered a few records during her 200 days on the
International Space Station - becoming the rst Italian woman in space,
among others. But the avid Tweeter no doubt breathed a sigh of relief
over this rst: being the only astronaut in history to drink an authentic
Italian espresso in orbit thanks to Lavazza's new creation the ISSpresso, a
system specially adapted for use in space. Star Trek fan Samantha donned a
Trekkie top for the momentous occasion, and wrote on Twitter: 'Co ee: the
nest organic suspension ever devised. Fresh espresso in the new Zero-G
cup! To boldly brew...' Cristoforetti (now safely back on Earth) was forced
to patiently wait for her ca eine x, after the January rocket launch was
postponed until May. Now that's some serious commitment to ca eine. It'll
make you think twice the next time you're grumbling over the Costa queue.
Wilder Goose
Premium vodka brand Grey Goose has launched a new hybrid spirit that mixes
its vodka with a touch of Cognac. Called Grey Goose VX, it's a viscous drop with
creamy vodka notes, before some oral avours come through with a touch
of orange, cocoa and spice. Is it a vodka? Is it a Cognac? Who knows… but that
bottle will certainly look great on your shelf. The recommended serve is to enjoy
a snifter neat over ice. £125, Fortnum £ Masons, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges
ROCK AROUND
THE CLOCKYet another piece of drinking history is
being revived from the mists of time
in the form of Rock & Rye, a drink that
was popular before Prohibition and
then faded away, which mixes rye
whiskey with rock candy syrup. The
wonderful New York Distilling
Company has been working on
developing their own version
for a long time, and it's finally
here. Called Mister Katz's Rock
& Rye, it mixes young rye with
that candy syrup, along with
some sour cherries, cinnamon
and a touch of citrus. Pour it
over ice, stir and serve for a
ready-made post-dinner drink.

SOFT IS THE NEW HARD
There are plenty of new products coming out for
the abstainers in our midst, with lots of new soft
drinks launching recently.
Devonian organic drinks company Luscombe has
released some grown-up new flavours, including a light,
slightly citrusy ginger beer and the Damascene Rose
Bubbly, a blend of spring water, organic grape juice,
Sicilian lemon oil and rose water. £1.70, luscombe.co.uk
Those watching their waists yet craving something cold
and fizzy should look to Schweppes and their brand
new low-cal juice drinks, available in three flavours.
The blood orange and grapefruit is our pick, a fresh
sip with a slightly bitter hint to it. £2, schweppes.eu
Meanwhile, Bottlegreen has added to its tonic water
range with its new diet tonic, which is perfect for G&T
drinkers who prefer their drink to be less bitter than
the norm. £2.20, bottlegreendrinks.com
Finally, new company Azizi has created two cordials that
apparently should be mixed with soda water and served in
Champagne flutes. The bottles contain 24 servings each
and there are two flavours: Gold, which contains lime and
mint; and Ruby, a heady mix of pomegranate, elderflower
and lime. £6.60, azizidrinks.com
