to explore the nuances of
bittersweet avours. Deep
brown, with rich avours of
caramel and smoky wood, Cynar
can be enjoyed neat, over ice
with a slice of orange, mixed
with soda, or in a huge variety
of cocktails - try it in place of
vermouth in a Manhattan or in
a recipe that's fast becoming a
secret handshake in London,
the Cynar Julep.
Grab a bite
Whether it's long and refreshing
or short and powerful, an
authentic aperitivo will always
come with a little something to
eat on the side. That may be a
bowl of crisps or olives or, as is
the case in some Italian bars, a
full-blown bu et featuring all
manner of bruschetta, cheeses
and cicchetti. The important
thing is to have something to
graze on so you can take things
at a leisurely pace.
Apart from that, there are
very few rules to the aperitivo.
You don't need fancy glassware
or bar tools, and you very rarely
need a shaker. In fact, most
of these recipes can be put
together in little more time than
it takes to open a bottle of wine,
making them a great choice
promotion
whether you're mixing for two or
for an entire party.
Elegant, lighter than spirits,
easier to prepare than cocktails,
but with a depth and complexity
of avour t to please the most
discerning of palates - it's no
wonder that in cocktail bars
around the world, the aperitivo
hour's time has come.
