self-perception and understand the interaction between body and soul.
If images from The Sound of Music come to mind at the mere mention of
Austria, the Gartenhotel Theresia is the place to indulge that fantasy - the
verdant hills surrounding this trendy eco-retreat certainly come alive in
summer - and its organic cuisine and weekly tours to see bee-keeping and
cheese-making at local farms make it a must for foodies. Those really trying
to capture the movie's magic could also head for Lake Wolfgang, one of the
settings for the lm and home of the historic Romantik Hotel Im Weissen Rössl.
First-class food awaits at Hotel Kaiserhof, with ve restaurants showcasing
the best in Tirolean cuisine, topped o with a weekly indulgent seven-course
meal - plus the chance to work it o on a 27-hole golf course, several fully
signposted cycle tracks, or with a swim in the spa's outdoor bathing lake.
Looking for a little quiet time? Life is pretty peaceful when you're high in
the glorious green mountains of Saalbach-Hinterglemm, but the Alpin Juwel
Hotel takes things a step further with 1,000 square metres of sun terraces, a
spa oering a range of Indian ayurveda therapies and romantic extras, such
as a couples' spa with bubbly or a private candlelit dinner.
Floating weightlessly in water from the Dead Sea is another way to promote
tranquillity, which is why Salzburgerhof in Zell am See includes a salt water
dome in its three-storey wellness centre, although those who prefer to let o
steam in other ways can opt for a round of golf on one of two 18-hole courses
or, better yet, can sample some of the 330 dierent top-£ight wines on oer.
BIKE OR HIKE
Adventure-seekers need look no further than Schladming. Known to
ski fans as home of the world championships, it also boasts Austria's
longest downhill mountain bike trail - a freewheeling 4.5km - plus
1,000km of hiking trails to explore. Luckily there's somewhere to
rest tired feet afterwards, in the mountain lodge-meets-modern
Falkensteiner Hotel Schladming, a very dierent design from its citycentre
sister, the chic Falkensteiner Hotel Wien Margareten.
Biohotel Stanglwirt oers another slice of action: try Nordic walking, tennis,
guided treks through the Wilder Kaiser Mountains, or canter on one of the
hotel's white Lipizzaner horses. Guests of Hotel Edelweiss § Gurgl can also
explore on horseback, although when you're in a mountain retreat set 1,930m
above sea level and surrounded by even taller peaks, there's no need to seek
out a better view. The same could be said for family-friendly Karawankenhof
Thermal Spa Hotel in Carinthia, as its neighbouring mountains oer picturepostcard
sights aplenty; there's also a warm welcome for kids who fancy
zooming down waterslides in the hotel's Kärnten Therme.
But if it's that storybook charm that attracted you to Austria, it's hard
to nd anywhere as atmospheric as the Trattlerhof, set on a 15th-century
estate in Carinthia, which has seen countless generations of Austrian life
over its long history - and it doesn't get much more authentic than that.
