orset is famous for a range of food
and drink, including seafood, apple
cake, cheese and beer. But there's
something new on the south-west
scene: Rupert Holloway is founder
and head conkerer of Dorset's very
rst gin distillery, and he's determined to put
the county on the map for spirits with Conker
Spirit's new Dorset Dry Gin.
This small-batch premium gin, distilled from
British wheat spirit and New Forest spring
water, has been a labour of love for Holloway,
who swapped buildings for botanicals a year
ago when he gave up his job as a chartered
surveyor to conquer the unknown of distilling
- and just smile a little more.
Distilling down an idea
"I thought, 'Why are we spoilt for local beers
and yet when it comes to the mighty GT, our
choice is restricted to the industrially distilled
brands?' So my journey to launch Dorset's rst
gin distillery began," says Holloway.
Conker Spirit do everything themselves,
with a focus on quality without shortcuts. The
premium gin is crafted with immense care by a
passionate team who are the distillers, bottlers,
labellers and even foragers of the spirit's handpicked
Fresh fl avour
The recipe for the Dorset Dry Gin has been
ne-tuned by Holloway sip by sip to compose
a fresh, intricate, quality gin, and while still a
proper classic gin, led by a dry Macedonian
juniper undertone, the subtle incorporation
of the Dorset notes of elderberries, samphire
and gorse owers brings bright and refreshing
lighter notes to Conker.
This exciting new freshness and a barely
perceptible alcohol bite will have you sipping
Conker just as it comes over ice, while for the
perfect GT, its recommended serve is with
Fever-Tree tonic and a strip of lime peel.
What's more, it is a great ingredient for both
new and classic cocktails, including Martinis
and increasingly popular Negronis. Launched
earlier this year, Conker's gin is already making
its mark, and is served in Hix Restaurants and
River Cottage HQ.
Conker Spirit's trophy cabinet is lling up fast,
with awards including a gold at the Taste of
the West Awards 2015, a two-star rating at
Great Taste 2015 and most recently, Best Drinks
Product of the Year in the Dorset Magazine
Food, Drink Farming Awards 2015.
This independent company is certainly a
rising star of the gin world, so let your taste
buds be conkered by something new and add
this refreshing, carefully crafted gin to your list
of reasons to love Dorset.
