Mac & Wild

65 Great Titcheld Street, W1W 7PS

020 7637 0510 Price £45

Andy Waugh's Wild Game Co

has nally put down roots - and

done so in wild style (complete

with deer hides) at this burly

homage to Highland life. Scottish

ingredients and Waugh's venison

inform a short menu that veers

from the macho (deep-fried

haggis balls) to the nessed

(lightly seared mackerel with

parsley emulsion). Perfectly pink

venison steak is just £12, and a

vast whisky list helps recreate

the fun of Hogmanay.

Molé

16 Picton Place, W1U 1BP

020 7486 1995 Price £45

The decor of this new smallplates

experimental taco bar

might be clichéd (bare walls,

low-hanging lights), but the menu

entices. From Tequila cocktails

through to dulce de leche crème

brûlée, Œavours are bold. Our

highlights? Tempura baby squid

with a tangy serrano cream sauce;

ceviche of octopus, sea bass and

mussels in punchy squid ink and

lime; and chicken-thigh tacos.

There's a lively atmosphere to

boot. Olé for Molé!

Suvlaki

21 Bateman Street, W1D 3AL

020 7287 6638 Price £31

21 Bateman Street reimagined:

the menu is largely intact, but

the interior is transformed, with

striking blue walls, Athenian-style

pillars, bare light bulbs and ugly

gra–ti. Claustrophobics beware -

extra covers have been squeezed

in. Fortunately, the great Greek

food remains: pork souvlaki wraps

are a highlight and the sharing

menu is good value. With much

food and drink imported from

Greece, Suvlaki is big on air miles

and Œavour, small on elbow room.

Poco

129A Pritchards Road, E2 9AP

020 7739 3042 Price £44

Ex-River Cottage chef Tom Hunt

has opened a second Poco

tapas bar (following the Bristol

original) on Broadway Market.

It's an inviting all-day spot, with

open kitchen, communal tables

and local produce. Hunt's rustic

brunch dishes taste appealingly

homemade, such as pork belly

sourdough sarnie, while his

monthly tapas menu might o›er

deep-fried oysters with kelp aïoli.

Go early for co›ee and churros,

or later for seasonal cocktails.

8 Mount Street

8 Mount Street, W1K 3NF

020 3463 2558 Price £54

Replacing ill-fated Le Chabanais

(but under the same ownership),

this smart venue now focuses

on the Mediterranean. The look

hasn't changed - it's still all

leather, marble and brass, like

a posh hotel's breakfast room

- but sta› are more cheerful.

Simple dishes fare best: Dover

sole with brown butter; French

beans with foie gras; proteroles

with chocolate sauce. Bypass the

nasty Pecorino crème brûlée, and

expect Mount Street prices.

Wahleeah

18 Farm Lane, SW6 1PP

020 3463 0663 Price £38

Brooklyn-inspired, beer-led

Wahleeah is a ballsy new concept

where everything is made from

scratch (from bacon to cheese);

lager is brewed in-house and the

chirpy sta› receive 20 per cent

of the prots. Beer is in virtually

every dish, but results are mixed:

a ne burger with house beer

ketchup is already popular with

locals, though a crab cauliŒower

cheese was watery. Hearty

weekend brunches with Bloody

Beers complete the malty mix.
