Your guide to what's happening on the restaurant and bar scene this autumn WORDS INDIA DOWLEY
MORE SOM SAAFairylit Thai pop up Som Saa in Hackney's
Climpson's Arch has something of a
Cinderella story about it. It began as
a humble street food residency from
chef Andy Oliver (formerly of Nahm)
and manager Tom George in the railway
arches at London Fields, and proved so
popular that they kept extending its stay.
The team then turned to Crowdfunding
to raise funds for a permanent shop
elsewhere. In a matter of days they
received a whopping £700,000 in
donations, far exceeding their target.
When we caught up with Oliver, he
explained: "I think our success is down
to the fact we gave diners the chance to
experience what we are all about via the
pop-up before investing." We're not able
to disclose the site just yet but it will be
in a slightly more central east London
location than the residency. The menu at
the 60-cover 'Bangkok-meets-London'
restaurant will feature old favourites and
new additions, all made for sharing. The
clever cocktail list that helped make the
pop-up famous will be available in the
30-cover bar. Som Saa is expected to
open in January/February 2016.
